Mobility Hubs: The Unique Solution for Urban Traffic Woes


KITCO is the pioneers in implementing Mobility Hubs, an emerging concept in Indian transportation sector. Different modes of transport are converged in a Mobility Hub so that traffic is effortlessly got streamlined along smooth spokes emanating from it, thereby decongesting the city and bringing down environmental & noise pollution to greater extents.

KITCO is the implementing agency of the Rs 383 crore project, the Phase-1 of which is completed.
Scope of Work:

  • Pre Feasibility Study that included traffic surveys and detailed analysis of various possible locations for the hub.
  • Detailed Project Report (DPR)  – Conducted various surveys, Prepared master plan, Architectural design and detailed Cost estimates.  The report was then submitted to JNNURM also for financial support.

In the first phase, there are 13 bays for the buses to park. The second phase includes the construction of other three floors of the building. The ground floor and first floor will be used exclusively for parking mofussil buses. The second and third floors will be leased out to commercial establishments. The two basement floors will be used for parking  private cars and two-wheelers. Some commercial establishments too will function on the basement . On completion, the Mobility Hub will have 124 bus bays where KSRTC and private buses will line up in their respective slots.
The terminal is proposed to be developed with two basement for parking, ground and 1st floors with bus bays and as many as five floors for commercial use. The total floor area in basement and ground floor will be 20,315 sqmt each and 1st floor will have 21,819 sqmt. The parking capacity in the basement will be 775 cars and 1,500 two wheelers at a time inside the terminal building. Separate City Bus Terminal will also be there with a capacity of 20 buses at a time.  Well equipped entry plaza, in two floors, with all passenger amenities will be an added attraction.  A total of 75 Idle bus parking bays also will be built.  The parking lots for the public will accommodate 900 cars and 120 auto-rickshaws with multi level parking options. The Hub will also host a world-class mega shopping mall, food courts, cultural center and health club, a hotel, a 50m swimming pool, a water front, parks, walk ways, and a boat jetty in a total buildup area of 13, 70,000 sq.ft, making a vibrant and attractive place of transit, work, shop and civic interaction. A provision for skywalk to connect proposed Metro rail station also will be there.  34,526 sqmt. of land will be set aside as  green area. Feeder system, Transit station, airport/train station shuttle services, smart cards are some of the value additions that Mobility hub offers. It offers 5000 direct employment. Shopping mall will be fully or partially air-conditioned according to the need with sky scrapper model. This built in-area can be leased out and retailers can be attracted to open their shops in the mall. Food malls, textiles shops and the jewellery can be other attractions.

KITCO had prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for design, construction and project management services.
KITCO's Role:

  • Three options for the concept plan were prepared and discussed with the stake holders and the most appropriate one was finalised.
  • The selected concept plan was then detailed to incorporate all the specific requirements of the authorities and stakeholders.
  • The final plan was further discussed and detailed design and quantity estimation were done to arrive at the project cost. 
  • Financial analysis was carried out to assess the suitable scheme for funding the project .
  • Master Plan for the project is finalised based on the following concepts:
  • Movement of pedestrian should not interfere with the vehicular movements.
  • Separate terminals for KSRTC (Moffusil services) and BMTC (city services)
  • Sufficient covered parking area
  • Adequate passenger amenities are to be provided
  • Movement of taxis, auto rickshaws and two wheelers are to be chanellised so as not to interfere with pedestrian or bus movements
  • Area is to be landscaped appropriately
  • Depot for KSRTC to park their vehicles and carry out minor repairs
  • Facilities for handicapped
  • Separate parking area for taxi /auto rickshaws/ two wheelers
